Criminalidade escrava e controle social no Rio de Janeiro (1810-1821)

This study tries to make a contribution to the theme of criminality among urban slaves by analysing the records of police arrests for the city of Rio de Janeiro during the period 1810-1821 bracketed by the arrival of the Portuguese Royal Family in 1808 and the advent of independence period in 1822. Most of the crimes committed by slaves were attitudes against public order, against the slave system or petty crimes. During the twelve years studied, the city and its population went through a continuous process of social and economic changes. Attitudes against slaves also changes. Police concern had shifted from one type of offence to another according to the problems faced by the police in relation to black people. Their main objective was to ensure the society's security and maintains the stability of the slave system.
