This paper begins by examining the role of protection when a country has a current account problem. It then considers macroeconomic aspects of trade liberalization, including the relationship with exchange rate policy and with capital market liberalization. Finally, the question is considered whether protection in industrial countries justifies proctetion by developing countries.
