The purpose of this paper is to found some aspects of the history of the family in England from the detail on family patterns to be found in censuses of particular localities, conducted at various times between the end of the sixteenth century and the early nineteenth century. Only those aspects of the
family patterns of past populations which fall within the framework imposed by the resident domestic group, the household, are in view.
