This article studies the problem of the manumission of slaves in Havana City in the beginning of the seventeenth century (1601-1610), using, as a source, all the manumission records conserved for the period, which only amounted to 82. We have calculated the manumission rates by sex, age, color and origin using some estimates of slaves population obtained from the sale records. The comparative analysis of the manumission price' and 'current market price is also done. The results are similar of those reported by precedent studies in Latin America: female Creole slaves show the greatest rate of manumission, while african male slaves show the smallest. Almost fifty per cent of the manumited slaves were younger than 15 years old.
