The evolution of poverty in Brazilian Metropolitan Areas during the 80s is described by means of some traditional indicators. Poverty is defined according to a family per capita income level based on consumption patterns and price structures specific of each Metropolitan Area. The indicators are: poverty incidence, poverty gap ratio, Gini index for the poor considered partial, in the sense that each of them covers only one aspect of the phenomenon and Sen index - a combination of the previous three. For the sake of conclusion, absolute values of some variables, such as size of poor population, average poor income, total income required to eliminate poverty, are presented in order to discuss option and cost of poverty alleviation policies.
