The agricultural sector was strongly affected by mix of macroeconomic policies introduced by Piano Real, that is, tight monetary policy and appreciation of the real exchange rate after july, 1994. The first semester of 1995 was extremely difficult. If Piano Real had itself based on a strong fiscal adjustment, it is very likely that the cost suffered by agricultural producers had been much lower. The increase in international
agricultural prices in the first semester of 1996 improved the agricultural situation.
