Abstract

The purpose of the present paper is to undertake an exploratory analysis of the
relationship between research and development (R&D) intensity and firm size for a
group of Brazilian firms for the years of 1993 and 1994, and also for the most
representative industrial sectors. In this sense, we make use of the rank transform
methodology as applied by Holmes et. Alii (1991). The results are compatible with the
ones obtained for American firms for 1985, suggesting that there is a negative
relationship between R&D intensity and firm size. From the sectoral analysis, some
differences were verified, such contrasts are attributable to distinct methodologies of
industry strattification or to specific structural characteristics of those industrial sectors in
Brazil.
