Abstract

This paper aims to show that the traditional agricultural modernization does not produce a self-sustained growth of the total output in later economies. Those economies are charactherized by low productivity and national income levels, and high dependence on imported imputs. The main conclusion is that the tradicional agricultural modernization creates disproportions in the production structure of these economies. Generally this situation is countervailed by an increasing deficit in the balance of payment As the ability to finance those deficits is limited, the output growth tends to suffer of continuity solution. The argument is exclusively developed in theoretical terms, based on Marxist equations of extended reproduction, later expanded by Oskar Lange.
