Abstract

This article analyzes the importance of the non-specialized spectator for the sustainability of the theater - notably the group theater in the city of São Paulo, in artistic and economic spheres. The article originates from the research “Honorable audience: a reflection on the relation between the group theater in the city of São Paulo and the non-specialized spectators”, developed during the Master's Degree in Cultural Studies at EACH/USP and exhibited at the IV International Symposium on Culture and Communication in Latin America at CELACC/USP. The author proposes that contact with the public should become a priority concern and responsibility among those who offer cultural activities or goods – producers, artists, broadcasters and researchers, so that the cultural action has real conditions, at the same time, to promote the decent sustenance of its professionals and to gain relevance and social sense.
