Abstract

The objectives of this essay are: 1) to approach the relations between the transformations of contemporary capitalism and the production of urban space; 2) reflect on the role of the State in the production of housing of social interest in Brazil; 3) problematize the experiences of some of the Latin American social movements that propose self-management of the houses. The research was organized in two stages: 1) literature review: urbanization and housing; 2) research on social movements that defend the right to city and housing. Housing movements play a pedagogical role for society as a whole, evidencing the need for practical experimentation in another way of reproducing social life. However, self-managed housing programs are still a residual public policy with little visibility.
