Abstract

With the objective of a contribution to the understanding of the scenario in which symbols of national and local identities have been evoked as a political strategy, this paper analyzes the case of the song (Oh) Minas Gerais, which may become an official hymn of the State, if approved a proposal in progress in the Legislative Assembly of Minas Gerais. We recovered the trajectory of this musical piece that also became an unofficial hymn of the Bolivian city of La Paz and counts on previous versions in other languages, among which we highlight variants sung in English, Italian and Russian. From the contextualization of its origins (even if imprecise) and the analysis of melody and lyrics, in articulation with their contexts of production and circulation, we propose to reflect on variations and recurrences, concentrating on the values and affections called in the construction of Minas Gerais and La Paz identities that are suggested in the form of music and in the song aspects that favor its consolidation as a "hymn".
