The affirmation of Portuguese as a language of science: the case of Botany

In a time when Latin prevailed as the language of science, a determining work for the study and teaching of Botany in Portugal arises in Coimbra, published by the Real Officina da Universidade. It’s the Diccionario dos termos technicos de historia natural, by Domingos Vandelli. In this work, Vandelli transposes into Portuguese the Latin terminology used by Lineu and other European naturalists, which is not only a brand of modernity, but also turns the study of natural sciences available to a major number of people. In this article, besides analyzing the importance and the linguistic particularities of the work, some of them resulting from the author’s origin, his condition of non-Portuguese native speaker, we will focus on the formal aspects of the drafting of this document and on the solutions found by the author to translate the Latin words.Downloads
