This article discusses the evolution of the Latin word grātus and its cognates into the Portuguese language. It seems to us that the etymologist should aim at determining the date of the earliest recorded ocurrence of each word. In this study we have intended to provide both the etymology and the earliest (yet provisional) recorded date for each of the fifty-five related Portuguese words.Downloads
