The reforms promissed during D. José I's Kingdom stand out specially by the actionof its Minister and Secretary of State of the Kingdom's Business, Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, Count of Oieras, then Marquis of Pombal, including the obrigatoriness of education and use of the Portuguese language. It transcribes a spelling-book model to teach how to read, write, count and the christian doctrine.Downloads
