Sarau das Mina in São Paulo: plots of a peripheral sociability

Abstract

Peripheral culture encompasses artistic and cultural manifestations that occur in the Brazilian peripheries, marked by social exclusion, in opposition to the "center culture" disseminated in the spaces of power. This research focuses on a female collective of peripheral culture in the south zone of São Paulo: Sarau das Mina. Our hypothesis is that we are facing the emergence of a "changing centrality", which connects peripheries, without going through the center-periphery relationship. In this case, centrality is not the product of fixed factors linked to the supply of products and services, but around cultural events with specific durations. We conducted interviews with members of the collective, poets and artists. By tracing people's life and space trajectories and seeking the meanings of this movement for their lives, we concluded that the sociability plots that territorialize Sarau das Mina take place on the margins of the center and do not establish a relationship of cultural dependence with it.
