Abstract

The article deals with the theoretical and methodological innovation that has taken place in the field of the history of cartography in the last two or three decades. By questioning the statute of objectivity and transparency of maps, new studies and researches consider cartographic documents as technical objects, products of social and cultural constructions, and means of communication based on a visual language of their own. The article points out to the main authors, events, and ideas that promoted this new history of cartography, a multifaceted and rich movement still little known in Brazil.
