Abstract

Although the basic biomedical sciences play a crucial role in preparing the students for the clinical years, its teaching approach is still organized in a very fragmented manner without providing an effective link to clinical practice in a significant number of educational institutions in the country. This structure leads to a lack of students' interest and, consequently, results in rote learning rather than deeper understanding of the subjects, with very low long-term learning retention. This report presents the use of standardized patient simulation modules aimed at bridging the gap between basic and clinical sciences, and to address communication strategies during the preclinical years of a medical course. The results were very positive, with great students’ engagement and an increase in the acquisition of skills, comparing the first and the second activities undertaken by all participating students. Therefore, the potential of simulation as a teaching strategy during the basic cycle of the medical course to make basic sciences more meaningful to students is highlighted.
