Modelo de Curso Teórico-Prático em Abdômen Agudo: Uma Proposta de Capacitação

Abstract

The experience of the doctor is one of the most important factors for the management of the acute abdomen. It is imperative that medical schools take a more appropriate approach to the subject, since newly trained physicians begin their careers in emergency units and the inexperience in managing this syndrome can cause service failures. The “Liga Bahiana de Clínica Cirúrgica” has a 15-hour course with a capacity of 45 students, divided into fifteen trios. There are 15 cases with checklists built by binders, and presented to the other members and scientific advisor for adjustments. In the first activity, ligants hold a conference on semiology of the abdomen. Then students go on to practice physical examination in “simulated patient” under the supervision of binders. On the following Saturday there is an interactive session on acute abdomen given by the specialist using Team Based Learning. On the second Saturday, the trios attend simulated cases of acute abdomen in a rotation scheme, with each member of the trio attending 5 simulated patients from the 5 different acute abdomen syndromes. The Practical-Theoric Course on Acute Abdomen reproduces an urgency/emergency situation and seeks to promote the reduction of unfavorable outcomes and unnecessary expenses that burden the Unified Health System and hospitals through a debriefing and checklist about the care and number of unnecessary exams requested. Placing the student in simulation practices allows the construction of reasoning where possible failures do not cause real damages to the patient.
