The chronotope of the hut and the foreign woman who writes in 18th-century Portugal: chronotope analysis of the preface of Aventuras de Diófanes by Teresa Margarida da Silva e Orta

This article aims to provide an analysis of the elements of space and time, guided by the Textual Theories of the Bakhtin Circle, in the apology-preface of the 19th-century Portuguese novel Aventuras de Diófanes by Teresa Margarida da Silva e Orta, a foreignized Luso-Brazilian author, in order to understand the writer’s textual strategies within what is termed chronotope. Here, the space-time relations present in the preface will be analyzed, which is characterized as a justification for the following work, so that elements such as the social position of women in the 18th century, female writing and publication in 18th-century Portugal, and a connection between the studies of women’s literature and discourse analysis can be discussed.
