Abstract

This paper presents a subtitling and translation project carried out in the second academic semester of 2020 in the elective course “Translation German-Portuguese” at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. The basis for the students' evaluation was a three-part portfolio, prepared by them over the course of the semester, in which each of them reflected individually on their learning process. The main objective of the paper is to analyze the students' portfolios in terms of the main difficulties they encountered when translating, the perception of their progress of their German language skills, their language awareness, and their translation competence. Other objectives are to demonstrate the distinctive features of audiovisual translation and to analyze flaws in the organization of the project, in order to share experiences with other instructors interested in carrying out similar projects.
