From Europe to the 'Land of Sugar': Germans as Migrants in ElfriedeJelinek’s Strahlende Verfolger

Strahlende Verfolger (2014) is the only text in which Elfriede Jelinek explicitly addresses Brazil, more specifically, the immigration of Germans who settled in the country over
the past 200 years. The article introduces this theatrical text within the framework of the reception of Jelinek's work in Brazil, exploring its context of creation, some of its stage productions, and offering an overview of the themes it addresses. Furthermore, it proposes a partially divergent
interpretation from that put forward by Evelyn Annuß in the updated edition of the Jelinek Handbuch (2025), which classifies Strahlende Verfolger as a “post-postscript” to another text by Jelinek, Wolken.Heim., but overlooks its thematic connection to the migratory movement of
Germans and its potential relevance to current debates on migration in Europe. The analysis presented here focuses particularly on the enunciative voices in the text and on the playful intertextuality Jelinek employs in relation to the philosophical production of the German tradition.
