In 2024, the bicentennial of the immigration of German-speaking peoples and other Germanic languages was celebrated. Although 1824 is officially regarded as the milestone year for German immigration to Brazil, when the colony of São Leopoldo was founded in Rio Grande do Sul, it is recorded that as early as 1818, while Brazil was still a colony, the government of Dom João VI was responsible for settling German families in the hills of Rio de Janeiro, and in 1820, German immigrants from what is now Switzerland were said to have founded the colony of Nova Friburgo (Savedra, Mazzelli 2020: 107). Among the various celebrations held in both Brazil and Germany, the Ibero-Amerikanisches Institut (IAI) hosted the conference "Transatlantic Encounters between Brazil and Germany: Dialogues on 200 Years of Emigration and Immigration," in collaboration with the Brazilian Embassy in Berlin and the University of Cologne, with the aim of building a bridge between the 19th and 21st centuries in relations between Brazil and Germany. The bicentennial and the conference in Berlin serve as inspiration for this dossier, especially with regard to today's transatlantic migration processes between these two regions. While immigration from German-speaking regions to Brazil has undergone two periods, the 19th century and the post-war period in the 20th century, there has been a significant migratory flow in the opposite direction - from Brazil to Germany - for at least 30 years with a profile that is changing increasingly with Germany's strong demand for skilled workers in various fields, such as healthcare and IT (Feijó 2021; Cruz et. al 2022). This new wave of migration to the Europe offers a rich source of research on various aspects: the linguistic training of emigrants still in Brazil and later in Germany, the training of German teachers, and the impact that the arrival of a considerable number of Brazilians may have on relations between the two countries in the short and medium term, among others. We would like to invite researchers to submit unpublished manuscripts that address issues related to contemporary migration processes between Brazil and German-speaking countries in their varied aspects. In addition, we would also like to invite researchers whose work deals with relations between Brazil and German-speaking countries in the first quarter of the 21st century in a comprehensive manner, with topics addressing issues of exchange and influence in the fields of literature, music, translation, sociology, and others.
