About the Journal

About Plural

Plural - Revista de Ciências Sociais is a biannual electronic academic journal coordinated and edited by scholars from the Graduate Program in Sociology at the Faculty of Philosophy, Languages and Humanities of the University of São Paulo (FFLCH-USP). The journal receives, in a continuous flow, articles/essays, reviews, interviews and translations from various lines of research in sociology in particular, and in the social sciences in general, which ensures its interdisciplinary character, always in tune with the new fields of national and international scientific production.

Focus and Scope

Since its first issue, launched in the early 1994, Plural has established itself as an important vehicle for the diffusion of scientific works and the results of sociological research in Brazil, standing out as a heterogeneous space of academic debate within the larger field of the social sciences. Thus, Plural seeks to provide the reader with the possibility of confronting the diversity of themes, theoretical proposals, research methodologies and intellectual styles, which reflects both the journal's commitment to plurality, and the desire that sociological debate between perspectives be an incentive to the advancement of our understanding of the social phemomena. The journal is aimed at academic and non-academic readers from Brazil and Latin America who are interested in sociological topics and approaches to recent phenomena.

Editorial flow / Peer review

The editorial process begins with a check for similarities with previously published texts, using the iThenticate software. If the similarity rates are above 30%, or if practices of plagiarism or self-plagiarism are identified, the authors are contacted by the secretariat of the journal, which will arbitrate on the interruption or continuity of the editorial process.

After that, the originals are sent to the editorial comittee ('desk review' step), which will verify if the texts are in accordance with the standards required for publication (failure to comply with the guidelines will result in the interruption of this process) and if the text meets the minimum structural requirements. A requirement to be observed is the minimum title of the authors: full master's degree (for article submission) and incomplete master's degree (for review submission). Decisions are communicated to the authors, who may choose to submit a new text or discontinue the editorial process.

Once the texts are approved by the editorial comittee, they are submitted to external referees, who may accept, reject, or suggest revisions. The names of the referees and the authors are kept confidential throughout the process. Nevertheless, the list of referees is periodically published by Plural, without jeopardizing the anonymity of the referees.

Plural does not charge any processing or submission fees.

Average processing time for incoming texts

The average time between submission and publication of articles, when accepted, is six months. In the case of translations or interviews, this time can be extended depending on the flow of texts in the journal.
