Urban dynamics in a city of ribbons: the Thursday of the Festas de Agosto

Abstract

The text presents ethnographic reports from the first day of the August Festivities in Montes Claros (MG), an important cultural event in the city that mobilizes a wide range of symbols and meanings to be observed. Although the urban dynamics on this day appeared less intense and effervescent, it proved to be an enriching moment for observing the cultural practices of a city that, during the festivities, dances to the rhythm of its traditions, creating a symphony of ribbons, colors, and flavors. The coexistence of the contemporary and the ancestral emerges as a vital link for the survival and continual renewal of the cultural richness of the August celebrations.
