The culture in non-human primates has been studied in Old World primates for several decades. Despite controversies about the definition, we can compare interspecies when an operational definition of culture is used. Studies with neotropical primates in this topic are more recent but already revealed many potential cultural behaviors. That could be used to build models and help to understand the evolution of culture in other primate groups, including our own. Those studies could allow a glimpse of cultural evolution in a primate group separate from great apes by 40My of evolutionary history, but that have several shared characteristics with this group. Capuchin monkeys are central in this discussion, as the only neotropical primate that habitually use tools. Further, they have a high degree of encephalization, and some populations are greatly terrestrial, all rare characteristics in primates, but crucial in human evolutionary history. Besides, the behavioral variance between capuchin monkeys’ populations is wide, with several behavioral sets being potential cultures of some groups.
