Abstract

This paper presents the theoretic and doctrinal concepts that rule agriculture and farming, the definitions of Moral Hazard and describes how the moral risk empirically happens in agricultural cooperatives and verifies whether there are mechanisms in Brazilian institutions to reduce the presence of these organizations. The law, the statutes, the principles and the cooperatives values establish that it is possible to adopt monitoring, incentives and punishment. However, the studied cooperative managers have been using some of the monitoring and incentives and have not been using the punishment ones, claiming that the principles and values that rule the cooperatives do not permit some of these actions.
