Abstract

The objective of this research is to analyze the global efficiency of financial and economic performance of Brazilian Credit Unions. To this end, we adopted the methodology known by the acronym PEARLS, applied the 25 largest Brazilian Credit Union for the period 2008-2012. The indicators PEARLS was submitted to Principal Component Analysis to select the most relevant indicators in terms of information, which were used to determine the efficiency of cooperatives through multicriteria method TOPSIS. The results pointed a concentration of unions belonging to Sicoob Unicred and among the most efficient of the sample, for the group of less efficient there is a predominance of cooperatives affiliated to Sicredi. The Brazilian Credit Unions can raise their performance and adapt its structure with improvements in performance and efficiency, and, consequently, its main function, which is to ensure the maximization of products and services offered to members.
