Abstract

This interview examines the main contemporary challenges facing Amazon and discusses how the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO) has consolidated its role as one of the leading regional cooperation mechanisms to address them. The conversation with Biviany Rojas Garzón, political scientist, lawyer, and Chief of Staff to the Secretary-General of ACTO, provides insights into the potential and limitations of South-South cooperation in the Amazon Basin, as well as the strategic role of institutional innovation and diverse stakeholders in promoting regional integration. The interview addresses a wide range of topics, including the environmental agenda, Amazonian security and sovereignty, the role of the Amazon in the foreign policy of the Lula administration, the participation of social movements, and ACTO's contribution to strengthening multilateralism.
