The crisis of traditional narratives (centered on the notions of authorship, style, schools, periodization; center/periphery hierarchies, major arts/minor arts; and West/Byzantium/Islam triad) opened new perspectives for the study of medieval art. Among them, the global turn that allow us to think about connections, interdependencies, exchanges and mobilities. The purpose of this paper is to analyze how ivory artifacts contributed to the constitution of a common visual culture in the Mediterranean between the 10th-13th centuries.
