Media Consumption TotemismAbstract
This paper aims to reflect the media's mediation role to what is holy starting from the concept of Media as a new totem in contemporary societies. Under the inductive-analytical methodology from bibliographic and documental base, the research explores the hypothesis that the media, as this new totem in media societies fulfills the organizing function, but not the mediating role. The media does not turn the aspirations and needs of humans to the Transcendent, but contains within itself the satisfaction of these aspirations by providing symbolic goods, but who have no contact with divine sources – there is no relationship with the Sacred. Thus, the media is presented in media societies as a desecrated totem – of ers goods of great universal values, but absent of any divine presence.
