The Pietro Bembo’s Gravità and Piacevolezza: Guidelines for the Interpretation of the Italian Madrigal of the XVI Century

Pietro Bembo, poet e literate born in Venice, publishes in 1525 his main work Prose della volgar lingua, a compendium about the vulgar language that was being established as the italian standard. It is in this context of questione della lingua that the italian madrigal is born, a genre of polyphonic composition known for the use of poems of great literary quality from authors like Petrarca, defended by Bembo. A “bembistic” text analysis can provide guidelines to the music performance, as the music was made having the words as foundation. Thus, I want to observe the poem O Invidia with the Prose and the gravità and piacevolezza qualities proposed in mind. This poem was set to music by Adrian Willaert, one of the madrigal representatives and Bembo’s contemporary.
