Abstract

The goal of this study is to offer a linguistic e xplanation for the phenomenon of Marranos surnames, showing that the nexus is arbitrary and that surnames do not project meanings semantically. From the selec tion of official documents issued by the Catholic Church that recorded financial transactions between Catholics and Jews between XII and XV centuries and from inquisitorial records of condemnation of the Marrano in Brazil in the XVIII century are analyzed through the processes of (re) construction and (re)categorization of referents in texts. Therefore identifying marks of (re)categorization incorporated in surnames and their disappearance due to discursive-textual instability.
