School Dropouts in Higher Education in Public and Private Institutions in Brazil

Abstract

This article aims to reflect on the issue of higher school dropout in Brazilian HEIs based on statistical data from SEMESP and INEP. Such information will help us to understand the causes that lead young people to drop out of the educational institution. It is known that school dropout is a worrying academic problem that has been getting worse every year both in terms of public and private institutions in face-to-face and distance education. The analysis will be done from a general point of view, that is, focusing on Brazil and also a specific analysis, seeking to understand how evasion occurs in the State of São Paulo, one of the most important states in the country. The choice to analyze the State of São Paulo is a strategic way of studying because, in addition to being a region with a potential number of higher education institutions, it is a region that holds a large contingent of students with different social and economic characteristics, making allow a more precise approach to the causes that involve evasion. Some considerations will be brought, alternatively, as partial solutions to circumvent this problem.

    Graduated in Technology in Systems Analysis and Development from Faculdade de Tecnologia do Estado de São Paulo, São Paulo, SP, Brazil; with a degree in Natural Sciences and a master's degree from the Postgraduate Program in Complex Systems Modeling at the School of Arts, Sciences and Humanities of the University of São Paulo, São Paulo, SP, Brazil.
