Abstract

The globalization process is provoking metropolitan growth as a result of powerful concentration mechanisms. This paper analyses tourism historically as an intrinsically decentralizing activity based on the classical contribution of the German geographer Walter Christaller. Actually we observe a competition between touristic peripheries and large urban centers and also integration forms due to the growing management capacity developed by world metropolises over all kind of flows, including people.
