This paper presents the concepts of sustainability and sustainable development and takes a systematic look at higher education in tourism and hotel management, suggesting possible areas for the absorption of skilled manpower. It also reviews Brazilian and foreign authors' views on the subject and outlines the history of tourism as a discipline in Brazil, its rapid growth and consequences. The reader is made aware of the effect of such rapid growth upon society and of a number of challenges springing from the concept of strategic planning towards sustainability in the sector of tourism.Downloads
