Cannes 1964: marco do engajamento dos críticos franceses ao Cinema Novo

This article examines how the Cannes Film Festival 1964 was decisive in making French critics begin to revere Cinema Novo at a time when some publications, especially Cahiers du Cinéma, were undergoing a political-ideological reformulation. Through a historical analysis of the arrival of cinemanovistas to Cannes, the evaluation of newspapers and magazines published during the festival – found in the archives of the Cinémathèque française – and an interview with Sylvie Pierre, it was possible to verify that Cannes 1964 was fundamental for the beginning of an alignment between the French critics and the Cinema Novo’s directors, and what interests were at stake on each side.
