Abstract

The present case study draws a broad picture of the Dutch translator August Willemsen as an important cultural mediator. His translation work served as the key discursive bridge between Brazil and the Dutch-speaking world, between Brazilian literature and Dutch literature. As a typical cultural mediator, he undertook a variety of discursive transfer techniques: fictional writing, translation, transcreation, criticism, essays, studies as well as a variety of more or less institutionalised intercultural publishing and personal networking.

  • Reine Meylaerts, Professor of Comparative Literature and Head of the Research Unit Translation Studies at KU Leuven

    Reine Meylaerts is Professor of Comparative Literature and Head of the Research Unit Translation Studies at KU Leuven. She was director of CETRA (Centre for Translation Studies; https://www.arts.kuleuven.be/cetra) from 2006-2014 and is now board member. She is the author of numerous articles and chapters on these topics. She is also review editor of Target International Journal of Translation Studies.

    É mestre e doutora em Tradução pela UNICAMP e professora titular no Departamento de Letras e Artes da UESC. Atualmente ocupa o cargo de coordenadora do programa de pós-graduação em Letras: Linguagens e Representações da universidade. Sua pesquisa trata a tradução como processo de transformação, o texto tradutório e a intersecção com a literatura, literatura de testemunho, o tradutor como mediador cultural.
