History, memory and resistance: representations of social reality in Memórias Somânticas by Abdulai Sila

Abstract

The aim of this study is to discuss how the social reality of Guinea-Bissau is presented, from the memories of the protagonist of the narrative Memórias SOMânticas by Abdulai Sila. The research is mainly based on studies by Halbwachs (1990) and Le Goff (1990), on history and memory; Hall (2016), regarding the concept of representation; and Bosi (2002), about resistance. The methodology corresponds to bibliographical and qualitative research, since the intention is to show how the novel points to an environment devastated by the colonizer; the ambivalence between reason and post-independence dream; but, above all, resistance as a sign of hope.
