Ressurreição and Dom Casmurro: the omniscient narrator and the fictional author

This article aims to analyse the similarities and differences between the novels Ressurreição (1872) and Dom Casmurro (1899), both written by Machado de Assis. In light of the thematic that the two books share – a man, corroded by jealousy, who destroys his relationship with the woman he loves –, the article intents to comprehend the elements that distance these two novels. Moreover, the purpose is to investigate the instances of omniscient narration in Ressurreição and fictional authorship in Dom Casmurro work towards the goal of making some literary structures of Machado’s first novel more complex when Bento Santiago and Capitu’s story comes to light.
