Moz Slam and the new dynamics of spoken poetry in Mozambique in 21st century

Abstract

From the United States to the world, poetry slam competitions establish rules for oral poetry presentations and streamline an international circuit that provides meetings between poets from different realities. This article takes the Mozambican competition Moz Slam to present and discusses the dynamics of production, circulation and reception of this format of spoken poetry that has been gaining acceptance, especially among young artists. The article highlights the presence of women in Moz Slam and Slam da Guilhermina during online slams in times of pandemic and is based on interviews carried out in Maputo with poets and cultural producers involved in the Mozambican slam scene and on monitoring the social media of these events since 2018.

  • Miriane Peregrino, Universität Zu Köln

    Doutora em Letras (Ciência da Literatura) pela Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ, Brasil) e mestre e especialista em Literatura Brasileira pela Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UERJ, Brasil). Entre 2017 e 2018 realizou Estágio de Pesquisa na Universidade Agostinho Neto, (UAN, Angola). No mesmo período, também atuou nos centros culturais brasileiros de Angola e Moçambique promovendo ações do seu projeto de incentivo à leitura e comunicação popular, “Literatura Comunica!”, contemplado com o Prêmio Todos Por Um Brasil de Leitores (2015) e o Prêmio Culturas Populares (2018), ambos do então Ministério da Cultura. Entre 2019 e 2020 foi assistente de pesquisa do Romanisches Seminar da Universität Mannheim (Uni-Mannheim, Alemanha) e atualmente é pesquisadora visitante no Portugiesisch-Brasilianisches Institut da Universität Zu Köln (Uni-Köln, Alemanha).
