From the affirmation of Angolanity to animist realism in Pepetela

Nationalist movements both in the colonies and in the diaspora were movements to affirm nationality, recover past traditions and political autonomy in relation to the colonial metropolises. In this liberation process, intellectual and cultural production played a fundamental role in the establishment of the African subject in his ancestral traditions and cultures, through literary meanings and expressions that touched his essence. That said, we propose, in this article, to discuss the process of Angolan literary formation and understand how, through cultural forms and elements (myth, supernatural, beliefs in spirits...), Pepetela returns to traditions as part of his writing project for nation.
