Abstract

This article proposes a discussion of realism based on the literary criticism of Lukács and Adorno. The notion of realism as representation of reality is seen against that one of reification as obfuscation of the world. Essays on Balzac, Dostoiévski, Kafka, Aldous Huxley, amog others, help to specify aproaches and evaluations of realism in the literary studies of both critics. Its is also discussed how different conceptions of the individual and of the western humanism are related to their concepts of realism and the  values of their literary criticism.
