Abstract

This paper examines the poetry of João Cabral de Melo Neto in the light of XVII century poetology, as studied, cultivated and shared in the dialogue that João Cabral had with Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen. We will see how this dialogue approximates poetry to a philosophy of the image, which, although essayistic in its intentions, risks a definition of poetry. To highlight this aspect of Cabral's poetry, we will turn to Hans Blumenberg's theory of metaphor, approaching his "absolute metaphor" of the "metaphor of invention", widely explored by theconceptistas, in order to examine the metaphor of the knife that leads the dialogue between the two poets. Through the metaphor of the knife, Cabral sharpens the wit with imagination, cultivating a mode of metaphorology, as suggests his reader, Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen.
