Abstract

This article researches the visuality in the poetry of Murilo Mendes, aiming to characterize it specifically. In order to understand the resources that sustain the poet’s “armed eye”, poems of different books are discussed, with particular interest in the attitude of the lyrical subject, that often remains as an observer. The studies of Emil Staiger and Wolfgang Kayser provide the basic tools to argue that the point of view of the subject is a fundamental category to the study of the poet’s work.
