Extremely popular among readers in the main cities of Brazil, licentious books were a constant concern among conservative society. Unable to count on the law to repress and definitively exterminate the consumption of pornography, political authorities were called upon to act in favor of public modesty. Bookstore advertisements in the newspapers reveal the genre's popularity, not to mention the concerned critics about the pernicious effect of these books. Anonymous or not, the publications provided a rich arsenal of information about sex that could be learned by young ladies and married women. It was a dangerously pedagogical literature: it taught a woman how to feel pleasure, by herself or accompanied. It showed women living autonomously, without punishment or consequences. In this article, we will get to know two of these books: the anonymous Amar, gozar, morrer (c.1878) and Cocotes e conselheiros (1887), by the pseudonym Rabelais. By going through the primary sources and commenting on these and other books, we seek to expand our knowledge of the literature – and the women readers – of the period.
