RECOGNISING THAT THE LAST TWO DECADES HAVE SEN GROWING INTEREST IN RAUL BRANDÃO (1867-1930), THIS ARTICLE FOCUSES ON HIS HISTORIOGRAPHIC PROSE AND IN PARTICULAR HIS HISTORICAL INTUITION THAT SETS HIM APART FROM POSITIVIST CONCEPTS AND DRAWS HIM TO THE STORY THAT HE WANTS TO TELL ABOUT THE WORKING MASSES, THE DEFEATED, BASED ON HIS READING OF EL-REI JUNOT, ON THE CENTENARY OF ITS PUBLICATION.
