Who can be Jesus? Reflections on the Brazilian cultural backlash from censorship of artistic manifestations

In this article, the cases of censorship of the play The Gospel O Evangelho Segundo Jesus, Rainha do Céu, which portrays Jesus Christ as transsexual actress Renata Carvalho, are defined as the illustrative framework for discussions about the Brazilian conservative turn. The main objective of this work is to trace theoretical reflections that relate the country’s context to the cultural backlash, as well as to discuss the notions of moral panic and of freedom of expression. Methodologically, we made a literature review, a documental analysis of the censorious process and an enlightenment of the media cases repercussion, based on a non-systematic mapping of journalistic materials. As a result, we understand that censorious gestures, besides preventing the public debate about diversity and imposing authoritarian attitudes when trying to curb art, also attempt to make subjects invisible and their identities violently stereotyped.
