Abstract

The present work aims to oppose the discourse of authorized sources and the discourse of expert sources on natural disasters taken from the press coverage of weekly magazines regarding the landslides that occurred in Rio de Janeiro in the beginning of 2011. Based on principles of Discourse Analysis, we have looked up the most common groups of paraphrases present in the pronouncement of these sources regarding the responsibilities for the disaster. From the analysis of seven magazines, it was possible to conclude that the expert sources focus on explaining the facts scientifically, from a propositional and evaluative perspective. Nevertheless, the authorized sources have an utterly depoliticized discourse, not taking for themselves the responsibilities assigned to them at that moment.
