Originally presented as a lecture and subsequently published as an illustrated book, marking its thirtieth anniversary in 2024, this text analyses images from different periods of Western history in which the fragment, through strategies of cropping, mutilation, fragmentation, and separation, expresses the experience of the loss of wholeness and of disintegration. Linda Nochlin examines how modernity has affected the depiction of the body and subjectivity, from the disintegration of the artistic tradition of Antiquity, through the modern processes of fragmentation, to the destabilisation of the concept of a unified subject and of unambiguous gender identities in the artistic languages of the 1970s and 1980s.
