Looking at discussions about the situation of women in the arts, promoted by Linda Nochlin, Audre Lorde, and other authors, this text seeks to investigate the creative spaces of American artist Joan Jonas based on the urban and socio-historical layers that traverse her work in the beginning of the 1970s. The contexts of her performances are accentuated, as they are seen as generators of the integration between the artistic space and the public space. Through comparative analyses, I hope to trace approximations and differences in issues related to site-specificity, seen that Jonas’ work causes a certain distancing, a shuffling of the gaze, and varying perceptions.
